Pulling Together - Video | The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!

Join Nick, Sally, and the Cat in the Hat as they learn about simple machines and how they can make our work easier!

In this story segment of The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!, Nick and Sally want to bring a chest full of costumes up to their treehouse to play dress up. But when it proves to be too heavy to lift all the way up, the Cat in the Hat suggests they find a simple machine in Machine-a-mazoo to help them with the task! There, the three friends eventually come across a pulley and discover that is the simple machine they'll need for the job!

What Is a Simple Machine? - Video | The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!

After she arrives in Machine-a-mazoo, Sally wonders where the machines are. She's looking for contraptions like the Thinga-ma-jigger, but the Cat in the Hat explains that simple machines are much less complex than that. And yet, they can help with even the hardest of tasks!

  • Teacher's Guide: Building Bridges | The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!

Teach your students about what it takes to build a sucessful bridge using this teacher's guide from The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!

What makes all the bridges the same? How do we know when a bridge works? With a little help from the Cat in the Hat, your students will use the Engineering Design Process and discover that a working bridge needs to be both long enough and strong enough. They will then have a chance to work with different materials to see for themselves what does and doesn't work. In this guide, videos from The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! are used to demonstrate these concepts, and make your students' engineering adventure an exciting one!

Building Bridges - Video | The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!

Join Nick, Sally, and the Cat in the Hat as they learn about bridges and what makes them work!

In this story segment of The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!, Nick and Sally are trying to figure out how to build a drawbridge. The Cat in the Hat takes them to the bridge-filled land of Spansylvania—where they meet a dragon who chases after them! To escape, Nick and Sally need to find a way to cross a gap using the materials around them. They discover in their adventure that some materials are better suited for bridges than others, but that all good bridges have one thing in common: they have to be both long enough and strong enough!

Is it Strong Enough? - Video | The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That

After they realize the bamboo stalk is too short, Nick and Sally try to find something longer. A leaf from the banana cabana tree is the perfect length...but will it be strong enough to support their weight? Time to call on Thing 1 and Thing 2 to test it out!

  • The Cat in the Hat Builds That - App | RTL 2015-2020

Do you want a science app? The Cat in the Hat gives you that with a tap! Kids play and learn in their backyard, to see how science is fun, not hard!

Based on the PBS KIDS series, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That, this app introduces pre-k kids to science inquiry and engineering (STEM) concepts through games tailored to their learning progress. Kids can build bridges, explore friction through slides and sort fun objects and tools in fantastical lands along with the Cat in the Hat, Nick and Sally.

As kids play, they earn rewards to decorate their treehouse and backyard, and unlock games that let them tinker and explore in their own way. The app also includes simple and fun hands-on activities that parents and kids can do together, extending the STEM fun to home and everyday materials.

  • The Cat in the Hat Pinwheel: Activity | The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!

See the wind at work by making this pinwheel! Invite children to observe what happens when they blow on it, run with it, or put it in front of a fan (slow speed and high speed).  They can also measure how fast the wind is blowing by counting the number of spins. Available in both English and Spanish.
